The Blues travelled to Aberaman (near Aberdare) to take on a newly formed side made up of mainly ex Pontypridd and Merthyr players now playing for Aberaman Athletic.
Not only were the girls faced with playing on the field they were thumped by Cardiff City in last years Welsh Cup semi final, but they had to play with only 10 players. This was due, mainly because of injuries and University commitments.
The Blues took the field on this most beautiful late September afternoon, with a defensive plan in mind. A formation of 4-4-1, allowing Tina French a free role up front. Miss Versatile, so far this season, Kirtsy Williams slotted into a more familiar role on the left hand side of the defence, and with this years Captain, Caitlin Tew, lining up slightly behind Tina, yet more as in a midfielding holding role.
Just when it seemed it couldn't get any worse, Aberaman took the lead within 5 minutes of the start with a thunderous effort, all of 30 yards out. Elisa in goal had no chance. It flew in off the cross bar. The Blues now knew that their task would be to limit Aberamans possession as much as possible, and for the next 30 minutes or so the Blues worked their socks off. Harassing, pressurising and competing at every opportunity, which lead, deservedly, to their equalizer. Another unstoppable effort from out wide on the right by Tina French. This was just the right up lifting tonic the girls needed to take them into the second half.
Having taken a well deserved rest at half time, taking on plenty of fluids, the girls set their stall out for the second half, by starting it the way they finished the first half. It must be said that Aberaman picked up their game and were looking to be the side who would score next as the Blues girls tired in the heat, but thankfully, any chances Aberaman created fell just short of quality and never really threatened Elisa in goal.
More and more the gaps were showing in the home sides defence as they began to tire also, and the Blues still looked lively on the counter attack. It was with about 15 minutes to go when, once again Tina French struck. Accepting a perfect midfield pass inside Aberamans penalty box and slotting the ball past a flat footed goalkeeper, to score what turned out to be the winning goal.
Aberaman had lost heart. They tried their best but the Blues tails were up and could sense a more that deserved victory.
They would not pass, was the attitude, and they didnt.
The 10 heroes of the day were Elisa, Kelly, Angela, Abbie, Kirsty, Angharad, Sian, Dionne, Caitlin and Tina.
Well done girls.
Heroes to Zeros
The Blues
took to the road once again, this time to the club furthest west in the
division, namely Loughor, and with a full squad with one exception, Dionne.
Although
the Blues took the lead after a quarter of an hour, scored by
Loughor
equalised 25 minutes into the first half from an uncharacteristic error by
Elisa in goal. Failing to gather a cross from the right, this gave the Loughor
striker an easy tap in.
Loughor
took the lead, which they were to hold onto throughout the game, shortly before
half time. Bad marking at a corner from the left allowed the home sides other
striker to have a free header. She duly
took full advantage of this, and headed powerfully home, to make the score line
2 1.
The second
half was best forgotten. The Blues never raised their game to threaten the home
sides goal, and to be fair neither did Loughor force any further anxious
moments in the Blues defence.
Lets look
forward to a much improved performance on Sunday October 25th when
the Blues entertain Trefelin at home.
Venue Reversed.
Having not
played since October 18th, the Blues were keen to get a game this
weekend. Unfortunately the weather yet again had the last word as none of the 4
grounds in Blaenavon were playable! As this fixture was a home tie against
Cascade in the 2nd round of the League Cup, we faced the only option
open to us and that was to reverse the venue, which Cascade accepted gladly.
Although
some of the girls had been and were suffering from heavy colds, we did manage
to muster 12 players, who initially gave a good account of themselves
considering some were forced to play in unfamiliar positions, namely Kaitlin.
It was Kaitlin who laid on the pass to free Tina to break the deadlock for The
Blues to go into half time 1 -0 up.
However,
the girls tired soon after the restart and were always on the back foot and
having to defend what became a continuous onslaught by the home side. It wasn’t
until about 30 minutes into the second half that Cascade equalised from a long
shot outside the box. The Blues’ heads visibly dropped, and before they could
regain any composure they found themselves behind after just another 2 minutes.
Cascade’s
tails were up and they deservedly put the tie beyond reach when they scored
their 3rd goal from a well taken move involving several players. The
Blues by now were chasing shadows and were desperately hanging on in there.
Cascade’s 4th
goal was controversial to say the least. The Cascade striker chased a pass
which she was always going to be 2nd to as Elisa came out to collect
the ball, but she collided with Elisa leaving her badly hurt on the ground, and
simply put the ball into the empty net. The referee deemed it was a 50/50 ball
and the striker was entitled to challenge for the ball. The game was held up
for a considerable amount of time so that Elisa could receive first aid on a
badly bruised ankle, which she suffered in the collision and had no alternative
but to leave the field. Having used the only sub available earlier in the game,
Abbie volunteered to put on the goalkeeper’s jersey for the remainder of the
game. 2 minutes later the referee blew for full time to put The Blues out of
their misery.
No game
again next week, November 15th, so the next game is away to UWIC on
November 22nd.
